We talk to Jeremiah DuBeau about how boxing and Tai Chi help emotional management and to grow self-esteem and the confidence to be yourself, your honest self, as well as a better version of yourself.
Jeremiah shares with us his experience with growing up as a teenager to young adulthood and dealing with a range of emotions and situations that were bettered (and that he continues to better) thanks to boxing and Tai Chi, as well as music.
Some of the emotions and self-esteem situations he shares with us, which are also the areas he is looking to help teenagers on through coaching and the use of boxing are: anger, frustration, insecurities, self-doubt, self-loathing, letting out bottled up emotions, and that it’s ok to express emotions as a male – contrary to “shoving them down”, which is what some male stereotypical guidance, unfortunately still provide to growing boys – teenagers and young men.
Furthermore, he explores with us his experience with teams and team building while in the Navy that helped him learn that he could trust and respect people, even people he didn’t like or that he disagreed with; that it is ok to be the real you, people will still be there for you.
We touch upon how music helps to express and feel (conscious awareness with body, heart, and mind) the array of emotions that are typically not allowed to be comfortably expressed and therefore, felt, by men due to societal stereotypes that are still at large.
Last, but not least, your support group, the people around you, matter a lot if you are going to allow yourself to be yourself, your honest self, in time; and working on communication and being honest, as well as attentive to wording and emotional needs are all possibilities.
It is thanks to the emotional management and self-esteem that comes from Jeremiah’s journey with boxing, Tai Chi, and music that he wants to make a difference in the lives of teenagers and young men; to impact their lives in the same positive way his life has been impacted and continues to improve thanks to these sports – boxing and Tai Chi – and creative/artistic activities – music.
