Inner Growth Word of the Day: Joy


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. the emotion evoked by well-being, success, or good fortune or by the prospect of possessing what one desires.


Joy in a sentence: People are enveloped by joy when their day is full of special moments that provoke the most beautiful and heart-warming feelings.


Joy in action: When within you – feelings of warmth, pleasant emotions, tingly happy sensations and other similar inner feelings arise – that is joy.


Joy and inner growth: One way that joy adds to your inner growth journey is that by looking to ensure joy is a part of your life you learn to take note of the things that bring you joy and those that don’t.  You also explore why or what causes you not to experience joy in certain circumstances and situations.  This exploration too, allows for inner growth as you really look to understand what makes you hold joy or not hold it and what you can do about it.


Joy and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What does it mean to me to express joy? What is joy to me?  When did I first experience joy?  Why is joy important in my life?  How has joy affected my relationships?  Who taught me a valuable lesson when it comes to joy?  What ways do I add joy to my every day?  What would I do if I could give joy to everyone?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with joy at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list think of three life events where joy was at the center of the events.  Now use the words from your list to write about each event and then find what commonalities the events had amongst each other.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about joy and allow them to flow without thinking of anything in particular, just the notion of joy in your life. As you do this, take note if your feelings settle in one or more areas of your body.  If this is the case, visualize your emotions flowing like a stream of water that is headed towards the ocean.  When you’re ready, allow thoughts to come in and focus on the ones that bring about the bigger emotional reactions.  What similarities do they hold?
