Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 3. a field for or pursuit of consecutive progressive achievement especially in public, professional, or business life. 4. a profession for which one trains and which is undertaken as a permanent calling.
Career in a sentence: Your career doesn’t define you; but as a major part of your life, it reflects some of who you are and the decisions you value.
Career in action: Growth in a job you hold or the progress you make in a field throughout the years is a career.
Career and inner growth: A look at the career path you’ve embarked on and continue to pursue as the years go by bring about inner growth as you look within to ensure there’s synchronicity between your active choices and your inner compass. If there’s a disconnect, this exploration also brings you to decide with awareness that which you want to continue pursuing in your life through your career.
Career and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: What does my career represent to me? How important is my career path and results in how I feel about my life? When did I first ask myself what career path I wanted to embark on? How does my career affect my life? How does it affect my relationships? Who influenced my choices regarding my chosen career? How did life play a role in the career I find myself in today? Do I like my career choice?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with career at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick one word that represents the essence of what your career means to you. Next use the rest of the words from your list to write about the essence of what your career means to you and how it makes you feel.
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about career and allow them to flow freely and without much thought. As you sit in silence visualize your emotions flowing like a calm river and telling you the story of your career. As you do this notice where your feelings seem to navigate towards more or come from, is your heart area warm or your gut or maybe your head. When you’re ready, allow thoughts to come in and notice if there’s a specific moment or two that come to mind at first. If so, focus on those and see what the feelings that arise from them tell you about your career choices and path.
