Inner Growth Word of the Day: Instinctual

Google’s Dictionary/Search definition: (adj.) relating to or denoting an innate, typically fixed pattern of behavior; based on instinct.

Instinctual in a sentence: When something is instinctual it’s automatic and not something you think about until after the fact.

Instinctual in action: If a specific situation produces the same behavior and/or action that is instinctual.

Instinctual and inner growth: Taking a look at those traits and tendencies that are instinctual bring about inner exploration that can lead to a certain level of awareness of your tendencies in that moment.  This type of insight allows inner growth because you can gain deeper knowledge of that instinctual pattern.

Instinctual and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What are some of my instinctual traits? When was the first time I thought about instinctual patterns I have?  How have my instinctual tendencies affected my life?  What role do my instinctual behaviors have on my relationships?  Are there any instinctual tendencies that I judge or want to change?  If so, why?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with instinctual at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick three words and think of one event where your instinctual patterns played a role in the outcome of the situation.  Write about this event with the rest of the words from your list.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about instinctual traits and tendencies, and allow them to flow within you. Take notice of the types of emotions that come to be and see where they go.  When you’re ready allow thoughts to come in and pay close attention to what instinctual traits come to mind, next focus on the emotions that each trait that comes to mind brings about within you.
