Inner Growth Word of the Day: Disappointment

Google’s Dictionary/Search definition: (n.) 1 a. the feeling of sadness or displeasure caused by the nonfulfillment of one’s hopes or expectations. 1 b. a person, event, or thing that causes disappointment.

Disappointment in a sentence: Disappointment can vary in how it affects each person, but one commonality is that it is always followed by a period of reflection and thought.

Disappointment in action: When you’ve worked so hard to obtain something or bring about a certain conclusion and things turn out differently, disappointment can happen.

Disappointment and inner growth: What disappointment brings to inner growth is the opportunity to reflect on one’s desires and expectations; and also, decide how to approach those unfulfilled events.  How flexible are you to change or how many different ways are you going to test before changing route?  Why is it so important to get that one thing to feel fulfilled?  This type of exploration is also very helpful in handling disappointment.

Disappointment and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What is disappointment to me? When was the first time I experienced disappointment?  What types of disappointments have I been through?  What have I learned about life from disappointment?  How has disappointment affected my relationships?  What is one way disappointment has changed me?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with disappointment at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now pick three words from your list and write down the one thing related to disappointment that they all bring to mind to you.  From this thing that you thought of, what specific event where you experienced disappointment comes to mind?  Next use the words from your first list to write about this experience.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about disappointment and allow your emotions to flow from head to toe. Notice where the feelings are stemming from in your body and where they are going.  As you do this in silence, think about a happy thought and see what event where disappointment was involved comes to mind alongside this happy thought.  At this point allow this event to speak to you through the feelings that it brings about within.
