Inner Growth Word of the Day: Empathy
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 2. the action of understanding, being aware of, being sensitive to, and vicariously experiencing the feelings, thoughts, and experience of another of either the past or present without having the feelings, thoughts, and experience fully communicated in an objectively explicit manner.
Empathy in a sentence: To have empathy is something that helps people to understand each other; this includes understanding how they’re feeling about something or what they’re thinking in regards to a specific experience.
Empathy in action: When you are aware of what someone else is experiencing without having been told what they are feeling or thinking, this is empathy.
Empathy and inner growth: Empathy helps you to understand others, which also means you can apply that same understanding to yourself. This ability helps inner growth because it allows you to apply external experiences to yourself and in doing so you are not only able to support others better, but also yourself.
Empathy and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: What does empathy mean to me? How has empathy helped me in my relationships? What have been some of my biggest life takeaways from experiencing empathy? When was the first time I thought about empathy? When did I first feel empathy for someone? How has empathy assisted me in making life decisions?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with empathy at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now think about one situation where empathy was involved and use the first list to write about this situation.
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about empathy and allow your feelings to flow. Notice what types of emotions come from your heart and allow those feelings to express themselves fully. When you’re ready allow thoughts to come in and focus on the first thought that came to mind.
