Inner Growth Word of the Day: Failure


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. omission of occurrence or performance.  2 a. lack of success.  2 b. a failing in business.


Failure in a sentence: No one likes to think of failure; but when you find the hidden lessons, it becomes a moment that you learned from and that enabled you to move forward in your life.


Failure in action: When you don’t do something or when you’re not victorious in an activity you’re pursuing, those are considered failures.


Failure and inner growth: Failure is something that assists inner growth because it is in these moments that we bring to the forefront our issues with ourselves, our life, our fears, and so on.  In these moments, reflecting on each of these things allows you to explore why this is how you feel and think, as well as what you want to do about it.  Failure also allows you to see what else you need to do to continue your pursuit of whatever project or thing you’re working on.


Failure and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What is failure to me? When was the first time I thought about failure?  What are some of my biggest takeaways from failure?  How do I handle failure?  When was the last time I felt like a failure and why?  What have I learned about myself from my experiences with failure?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with failure at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now write down two experiences you’ve had with failure.  One where you were alone and the other where you were with someone or a group of people.  Use the words from your first list to write about them.  Once you’re done, notice what stands out from the two and what they have in common.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about failure and alongside this add a feeling of understanding and compassion that comes from the heart. Do this if the emotions that are passing by upset you a bit more than you’d like, otherwise just allow the feelings related to failure to share with you their message.  Do this for a couple minutes and then allow your thoughts to come in.  Whatever thought stands out the most from that which crosses your mind, focus on it and let the feelings from that moment speak out to you.
