Inner Growth Word of the Day: Desperate

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (adj.) 1 a. having lost hope. 1 b. giving no ground for hope.  2 a. moved by despair or utter loss of hope.  2 b. involving or employing extreme measures in an attempt to escape defeat or frustration.  3. suffering extreme need or anxiety.

Desperate in a sentence: When you’re desperate you’ll do anything to regain a sense of hope.

Desperate in action: Feeling lost or as if there’s no way out of something can make you feel desperate.

Desperate and inner growth: In those moments where we feel desperate and like we’re out of options, we think about many things and this contemplation can help us find out what it is we need to work on most for ourselves.  If we take a look within and find our hope, we can also gain strength to take action.  Desperate situations bring about inner growth because they help us find ourselves at a deeper level and also get us to gain that strength we need to move forward from within.

Desperate and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What’s my definition of desperate? When have I been desperate?  What did I learn from my moments of desperation?  What has being desperate taught me about life, about me, and about others?  How have I used situations where I felt desperate to find myself?  What types of things or situations make me feel desperate?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with desperate at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now write a list of three moments where you were surrounded by a desperate feeling.  Pick one of the three moments and use the words from your first list to write about this moment (what you went through, what you learned about yourself, how it improved your life, etc.).

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about desperate moments in your life. Try to focus on what you’re feeling and not what happened in those moments.  After a couple of minutes bring your attention to the positive outcome of those moments and focus on that feeling.
