Inner Growth Word of the Day: Identity

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. sameness of essential or generic character in different instances.  2 a. the distinguishing character or personality of an individual.  3 the condition of being the same with something described or asserted.

Identity in a sentence: What’s your identity depends on you or on those you allow to define it for you.

Identity in action: A group of characteristics brought together to define an individual or thing becomes an identity.

Identity and inner growth: Knowing your identity means exploring it from different angles, even questioning the characteristics that are a part of it to deepen your exploration.  Throughout this process, you pursue inner growth by developing the identity you feel fits you, the one that is in sync with your heart.

Identity and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about identity? What do I know about my identity?  Who has defined my identity?  Has my identity changed through time?  If so, in what way?  When I think about my identity, what stands out the most?  Has someone or something influenced what I see as my identity?  If so, who or what and how did they influence me?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with identity at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Next to each word you listed put one characteristic of your identity that comes to mind when you read the word.  Do you notice any consistent themes in the characteristics that you’re listing?  If so, use one word to describe this one trait that seems to keep coming up.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about identity allow the feelings to take over and silence the mind. Do this with the first feeling that came about when you read the word identity.  After about five minutes allow your thoughts to come through too and for each event or thought that crosses your mind focus on it and the feeling.  When you’re done, make a mental note of any one particular feeling or thought that kept crossing your mind and come back to it the next time you focus your feelings on identity.
