Inner Growth Word of the Day: Culture
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 5 a. the integrated pattern of human knowledge, belief, and behavior that depends upon the capacity for learning and transmitting knowledge to succeeding generations. 5 b. the customary beliefs, social forms, and material traits of a racial, religious, or social group. 5 c. the set of shared attitudes, values, goals, and practices that characterizes an institution or organization. 5 d. the set of values, conventions, or social practices associated with a particular field, activity, or societal characteristic.
Culture in a sentence: Since culture is a part of everybody’s upbringing it plays a significant role in thoughts and actions of each individual.
Culture in action: Beliefs, behaviors, social norms, values and attitudes are some of the things that stem from your culture; and that also make up your culture.
Culture and inner growth: A lot of what we believe is taught to us through our culture, but once we become aware of this it also means we are able to take a step back and explore our thought processes, behaviors, and so on. This helps us to keep an open mind about our feelings if not in tune with our beliefs, and it also allows us to stay open to different cultures; both add to our person and lead to inner growth due to our openness to consider something else instead of being closed off to it.
Culture and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I think about culture? How has culture affected me? How do I feel about my culture? How do I feel about different cultures? What has my culture taught me about life? How has my culture changed through the years? What’s one thing that stands out about my culture? Why does it stand out to me?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with culture at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Create a second list of at least five things that you’ve changed about your culture through the years because what you used to believe in didn’t feel in sync with you. From those five things pick one and write about how you transformed it to what it is today. If it fits your story, include the words from your first list to write it.
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about culture and focus as much as you can on letting that feeling spread throughout your entire body. Keep the thoughts at bay for about five minutes if you can. When the time is up, let those thoughts come in and try to hone in on one thought at a time and the feeling it is bringing about. Let each have its time with you; and when you’re done, note if one of the feelings associated to the thoughts stood out more than the other.
