Inner Growth Word of the Day: Overthinking


Google’s Dictionary/Search definition: (v.) think about (something) too much or for too long.


Overthinking in a sentence: Overthinking is something that everyone does from time to time on things that usually mean a lot to them.


Overthinking in action: When you think about something or someone for long periods of time, you’re overthinking.


Overthinking and inner growth: Overthinking something or someone is an indication that the situation or person is very important to you; this in turn, brings you to explore why they are so important, so meaningful.  When you’re looking into the importance of something or someone you will uncover your reasons, your whys, and this brings inner growth because you’ll be faced with making decisions or changes depending on what you decide (as you explore).


Overthinking and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about overthinking? When do I overthink?  Why do I overthink?  How has overthinking affected my life?  What have I learned from my moments of overthinking?  Do I know others who overthink?  How have these overthinkers affected my life?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with overthinking at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. With that list of words describe one scenario where you were overthinking.  What stands out about your story?


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about overthinking and focus on allowing that first feeling to expand as much as possible. If you are distracted by thoughts try to remove those thoughts and allow that one feeling to express itself for at least five minutes.  Once the five minutes are up, allow your thoughts to come into play too and make note of what thoughts cross your mind and what feeling each of them bring about.  Do you notice any differences between the first feeling you had about overthinking and the ones that followed as you allowed your thoughts to cross your mind?
