Inner Growth Word of the Day: Open-minded

 

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (adj.) receptive to arguments or ideas.

 

Open-minded in a sentence: An open-minded person doesn’t close themselves off from different ideas or opinions.

 

Open-minded in action: When in an argument, the person open to listening to different opinions is being open-minded.

 

Open-minded and inner growth: Someone who’s open-minded tends to take in more information than someone who’s closed off to new and/or different information and opinions.  This mindset helps inner growth because it means that you’re not judging or shutting out what’s being shared with you.

 

Open-minded and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: Am I open-minded? What do I think about open-mindedness?  How has being open-minded affected my life?  Do I think there’s such a thing as too much open-mindedness?  What have I learned thanks to being open-minded?  Do I find others to be open-minded?  Are there levels of open-mindedness?  How would my life be different if I weren’t open-minded?

 

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with open-minded at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. With those words write an experience you went through where you were open-minded.  Now make a list of different ideas that you are open-minded about and ones that you aren’t if there are any.  List the reasons why you’re open-minded about the ones you listed as open-minded and why you’re not open-minded with the ones you listed as not open-minded about.  Then explore those reasons.

 

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about open-minded and notice if there are ideas or arguments where your feelings about open-mindedness change. If there is a change in the feelings you’re experiencing as you think of different scenarios where you apply open-mindedness, explore each at your own pace and time, and try to understand what makes you feel that way.
