Inner Growth Word of The Day 36 – Resistance

February 5

Inner Growth Word of the Day: Resistance

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. an act or instance of resisting: opposition. 1 b. a means of resisting. 3. an opposing or retarding force.

Resistance in a sentence: Changing habits or thought processes doesn’t happen without some resistance.

Resistance in action: When someone encounters a situation they’re not in favor of or disagree with, resistance typically takes place.

Resistance and inner growth: Your resistance to things, situations, and/or people gives you the opportunity to explore and expand your perspective; in turn this also brings about openness towards transformation leading to inner growth.

Resistance and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: When do I notice resistance most in the things that go on in my life? What does ‘resistance to something’ mean to me?  Do I think it means good or bad, or just something that creates uneasiness?  How has resistance affected me and my life?  What have I learned from resistance?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with resistance at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Then make a list of all or some of the events, things, or thoughts (that come to mind) where you recall resistance coming into play.  Pick one of the items on this second list and write a story where the situation plays out, but without resistance.  What’s one or two things that stand out the most about the story?

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about resistance and notice if you’re applying any judgement as you do this. Let your feelings and thoughts flow, but if you notice blockages along the way let those stoppers direct you to your next feeling and thought.  By doing this you avoid stopping your feelings from flowing and you will be exploring a feeling that is still related to resistance.
