Inner Growth Word of the Day: Conflict

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 2 a. competitive or opposing action of incompatibles:  antagonistic state or action (as of divergent ideas, interests, or persons). 2 b. mental struggle resulting from incompatible or opposing needs, drives, wishes, or external or internal demands.

Conflict in a sentence: Conflict can present itself when your conscience is not in sync with your life and actions.

Conflict in action: When opposing thoughts or actions take place within you or with others, conflict arises.

Conflict and inner growth: Conflict is an opportunity for you to explore two opposing views and/or feelings, which leads to more questions about your views and/or feelings.  This type of exploration brings inner growth because it makes those views and feelings come to the surface, allowing you to see them clearly.

Conflict and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about conflict? What types of internal conflicts do I have?  What types of conflicts do I have with others?  How do I deal with conflict?  In what ways have my conflicts affected me?  What have I done to resolve my conflicts?  Do I believe conflicts can be resolved?  If no, why?  If yes, why?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with conflict at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Now write down one to five internal conflicts you have.  With the words you associate to conflict and the internal conflicts you listed do you notice any pattern in your feelings towards conflict?  Next pick one internal conflict you listed and write a story where you resolve that conflict throughout the story.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about conflict. As you notice those feelings is anything specific going through your mind?  If you had to put into words what you’re feeling, what would you say?  How would you describe the feeling and what’s going on inside of you?

Your turn – Share your conflict sentence, life examples, and inner growth action steps; and let me know if you’d like to see something added to our Inner Growth Word of The Day explorations 🙂
