Inner Growth Word of the Day: Consciousness definition: (n.) 1. the state of being conscious; awareness of one’s own existence, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.

Consciousness in a sentence: Consciousness of who you are with all that life entails brings plenty of thought provoking and inspiring moments.

Consciousness in action: Thanks to consciousness an individual is able to see themselves from the outside while also being on the inside and seeing everything that is outside of them and interacting with them.

Consciousness and inner growth: Without consciousness, inner growth would be tough to pursue since inner growth is all about looking within, getting to know yourself, exploring different things that affect you, your thoughts or things you want to change, and so on.  You can’t do all these things without being aware of yourself, thoughts and surroundings.

Consciousness and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: You want to ask yourself questions that can get you to understand the depth of your consciousness so use thoughts or situations that have happened to you or could happen to you when formulating your questions – Why did I get upset when talking about XYZ topic? I know my opinion on it, but could there be more since I get so defensive?  Or is it that I can’t accept that others have a different opinion from mine?  If so, what does that say about me?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with consciousness at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated to it. Then create one or more lists or word bubbles with words that describe yourself, sensations, thoughts, surroundings, etc.  Now, write a short story where you interact with someone or something happens to you and you describe from your consciousness why you are acting the way you are or saying what you are saying, and so on.  When you’re done check your existing lists or word bubbles to see if your idea of consciousness of yourself matches up with the way things went in your story.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings with consciousness. Is there any part of exploring yourself to bring things to the surface that upsets you?  If so, you have a right to decide to stop your exploration until you’re ready to pursue it again.  Don’t judge yourself, but be objective.  Your trigger to there being defenses up with consciousness are feelings of anger or frustration, if you start making excuses to justify yourself to yourself.  Those are some of your cues to stop what you’re doing and pick up some other time or to be straight with yourself, really direct.
