Inner Growth Word of the Day: Listening
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) 2. to hear something with thoughtful attention.
Listening in a sentence: When you are listening, you are paying attention while removing yourself.
Listening in action: If you hear something and understand it from its core, that is listening.
Listening and inner growth: Knowing when you’re listening and when you’re not brings about inner growth as you learn to identify yourself within the process and remove yourself so that you may truly hear what is being said and/or identify the veil of you within that which you are listening to.
Listening and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: How does listening affect my life? When am I listening? Why is listening important to me? How does listening affect my relationships? Why is listening something I am concerned with? What does listening entail to me? Do I feel like listening all the time? When am I not in the listening mood?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with listening at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. From this list think of one instance where you were listening, but you weren’t. Write about it with the words from your list and notice what stands out from this experience.
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about when you are in listening mode and allow your emotions to flow. As you do this keep the attention focused on your emotions and notice where they seem to settle more. When you’re ready allow those feelings to evenly distribute and bring thoughts to mind of any moments in your life where listening was involved.
