Inner Growth Word of the Day: Essence

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 b. the individual, real, or ultimate nature of a thing especially as opposed to its existence.  2. something that exists.  4. one that possesses or exhibits a quality in abundance as if in concentrated form.  5. the most significant element, quality, or aspect of a thing or person.

Essence in a sentence: The essence of a person is so vast with feelings and emotions that it isn’t easy to express its entirety through words.

Essence in action: That which you feel is who you are, or that which you identify someone to be, is essence.

Essence and inner growth: Exploring your essence gives you a lot to think about as you attempt describing and putting into words that which you feel you are and represent through your existence.  As you do this inner growth takes place each step of the way since identifying your essence comes slowly and throughout your lifetime.

Essence and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I identify as my essence? How does my essence play a role in every decision I make?  When did I first think about the essence that I am?  Who introduced to me the idea of essence as related to my being and the expression of me?  Why is essence important in my life?  How has my essence affected my relationships and life?  What is one of my biggest takeaways from my essence and how it relates to the world?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with essence at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick three words that stand out and link them to your essence when it comes to how you feel about life.  As you write about your thoughts take note of the emotions you feel as you’re writing.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about essence and allow them to flow while sitting still in a quiet place for a couple minutes. When you’re ready, start focusing on where your emotions are coming from and going.  Visualize the pathway in your mind and as you do this, if there are any emotions accumulating in certain areas, visualize them dispersing throughout your body evenly.  As you do this, allow thoughts to come in and take note of what exactly comes to mind that causes a bigger emotional response within you.
