August 17

Inner Growth Word of the Day: Death

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. a permanent cessation of all vital functions.  4. the state of being no longer alive.

Death in a sentence: Death can happen on a physical level, but also an emotional one; in either case, it comes with its challenges since it involves change and the cessation of contact with a loved one or a part of you.

Death in action: When a person or characteristic ceases to exist that is death.

Death and inner growth: Dealing with death is something that can assist inner growth since it gets you to explore the pain in going through the change of not having someone or something around anymore that you care for and/or were accustomed to being a part of your life.  Inner growth also comes as you find your balance and personal way of going through this type of life experience.

Death and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What does death mean to me? How do I handle death?  What have I learned about life from death?  When was the first time I thought about death?  Who has influenced my way of dealing with death?  What have I found out about myself when dealing with death?  How has death of something or someone affected my relationships?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with death at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick one word that brings about the biggest emotional response within.  From this word think of a specific situation where you were dealing with death and write about it using the rest of the words from your first list.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about death and as you do this think of something that warms your heart so that you can ease the painful emotions that arise from this life experience. As your emotions flow throughout your body notice if they stay in one or more places in your body.  Visualize your emotions flowing evenly and when you’re ready allow thoughts to come in.  Notice what thoughts come by and how they make you feel.
