Inner Growth Word of the Day: Grief


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 2 a. deep and poignant distress caused by or as if by bereavement.  2 b. a cause of such suffering.


Grief in a sentence: Grief is something that accompanies life and where your support system makes all the difference, starting with your own support to yourself.


Grief in action: When you are in emotional pain and stress that can be grief.


Grief and inner growth: A look within when feeling grief allows you to find the positives that you hold within and the proactive mindset you have to address challenges and challenging situations.  This type of exploration and what you find brings inner growth because you uncover parts of you that you may have not been aware of until you dug a bit deeper to help yourself through a struggle.


Grief and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What is grief to me? When was the first time I felt grief and why?  What conclusions have I drawn about life following a moment of grief?  How has grief affected my life?  What lessons have I gained from grief?  When did grief strike for the first time in my life and what brought it about?  How has grief affected my relationships?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with grief at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Think of three situations where you experienced grief.  Pick one of the three to write about and use the words from your first list.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about grief and allow them to flow. Notice where they stem from and where they go and if they seem to sit in one or more places in your body, visualize them moving along like the water in a stream flows down that stream without anything blocking it.  When you’re ready, accompany that state of focus on your emotions with a happy thought, something that warms your heart.  Next think of a situation where grief was present and take note of how you feel.
