Inner Growth Word of the Day: Comparison

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1:  the act or process of comparing.  1 a. the representing of one thing or person as similar to or like another.  1 b. an examination of two or more items to establish similarities and dissimilarities.

Comparison in a sentence: A comparison of behavior or other personal aspects is something that happens naturally, but what the comparison sparks within depends on the person.

Comparison in action: When a person looks at the similarities between one or more things it is a comparison.

Comparison and inner growth: Exploring the types of comparisons you make helps you to find the things that are within you or a part of your life that you look to understand further, possibly change or simply look at from a different angle.  When you dive in to those comparisons you also pursue inner growth since you bring to the surface the source for the comparisons you take time to make.

Comparison and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What does a comparison mean to me? How have comparisons of my personal traits helped me?  What has changed following the acknowledgement of the comparisons I tend to make?  How have comparisons changed my life?  When was the first time I made a comparison?  Who affects the comparisons I make?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with comparison at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick three words that stand out the most.  Now think of a situation where you made a comparison that affected your life in an important way.  With the remaining words write about this incident and what type of emotional response it created within you.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about comparison and let those emotions flow within. As you do this don’t think about anything, but instead, focus on the feelings and notice where they come from and where they go.  When you’re ready bring to mind the first time you made a comparison.  From here take a look at how you feel and let your feelings do the rest of the talking.
