Inner Growth Word of the Day: Talk down

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) 1. to speak in a condescending or oversimplified fashion.  2. to disparage or belittle by talking.

Talk down in a sentence: To talk down to someone indicates the need to feel above that someone.

Talk down in action: When you talk to someone in a condescending way or belittle them that is to talk down.

Talk down and inner growth: The need to feel superior to someone else or to make someone else feel “smaller,” whether done intentionally or unconsciously is an opportunity for inner growth since it represents the need to fill a void or a lack of certainty as to where one stands.  If you are being talked down to by another this is also an opportunity for inner growth because you can show empathy and actually help the person see what is really going on through their actions.

Talk down and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I think about those who talk down to others? Have I talked down to someone?  Why does talking down take place when I do it?  What about when someone does it to me?  What have I learned about life from situations where talking down was involved?  Who in my life tends to talk down to me or to others?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with talk down at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list think of two situations where you were talked down to and where you talked down to someone.  Write about these stories in detail and notice what commonalities they have.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about talk down and allow these emotions to flow throughout your body. See where they go and as you do this also think of situations where talking down was involved.  Bring your heart to think of love and reassurance for the person doing the talking down.
