Inner Growth Word of the Day: Pet peeve

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) a frequent subject of complaint.

Pet peeve in a sentence: A pet peeve can impact a situation to whatever extent you allow that pet peeve to affect your emotions and actions.

Pet peeve in action: When you find something annoying, be it a habit or a particular behavior or physical trait, that is a pet peeve.

Pet peeve and inner growth: When it comes to pet peeves and inner growth, knowing what yours are and realizing that they are personal expectations or desires on others (how to behave or not behave, what to do or what not to do, and so on) allows you to remember that you manage how these pet peeves affect you, but also that these pet peeves are constructed by you as well; and therefore, can be removed and/or changed at any time.  With this level of awareness and knowledge, inner growth takes place as you explore your pet peeves and decide on where they stand in your day to day life and decisions, or interactions with others, and so on.

Pet peeve and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What is my biggest pet peeve? How do I handle pet peeves?  When was the first time I defined something as a pet peeve?  How have pet peeves affected my life?  How do they affect my relationships?  How do pet peeves affect me emotionally?  What level of importance do I give my pet peeves?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with pet peeve at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now list three of your pet peeves and pick the one that affects you the most.  Write about it using the words from your first list of words.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about a pet peeve and allow those emotions to tell you exactly why this is a pet peeve for you. As you focus on your feelings make a list of questions that come to mind as to where those exact emotions are coming from, why do they arise with this particular pet peeve.
