Inner Growth Word of the Day: Self-Defining

No dictionary definition (so here’s mine when combining the words and their meanings): (v.) 1. The act of determining or identifying the essential qualities or meaning of one’s self. 2. The act of discovering or setting forth the meaning of one’s self.  3. The act of defining one’s self through self-definition (Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) the evaluation by oneself of one’s worth as an individual in distinction from one’s interpersonal or social roles).

Self-Defining in a sentence: It’s not always easy to attempt self-defining one’s self in the absence of labels and attributed given to us by others for so long.

Self-Defining in action: When a person sets forth who they are, what they are worth, and how they see themselves to be (both inside and out) in the absence of external definitions and labels, that is self-defining.

Self-Defining and inner growth:  Self-defining brings to inner growth because it has you looking to define who you are by removing the outside inputs you’ve gotten from everyone else and using solely what you feel in your heart is who you are.  It brings you to uncover yourself, even those opinions of others that you find valid or just seem to not be able and shake off as being applicable to you (even though in your heart you may not think so).  Knowing all this of yourself, whether you choose to transform or change or not, mean inner growth because you see yourself fully and define yourself as such, which consequently also leads to acceptance and unconditional love (also a part of the inner growth journey).

Self-Defining and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I think about self-defining? Have I self-defined myself yet?  If yes, has that self-definition changed or stayed the same?  How as my self-defining me affected my life?  In what ways did self-defining myself change my relationship to the world and society?  How has self-defining myself affected my relationships?  What did I find out about myself that struck me the most when I self-defined myself?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with self-defining at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. With this list describe your self-definition and how this process went for you, how is it still going for you if you continue to add/mold your self-definition.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about self-defining and allow those feelings to speak to you about how you see yourself. Notice where your emotions stem from, where they go and how they flow.  After a couple minutes of doing this, let thoughts come in around who you see yourself to be and focus on the thought that brings about the biggest emotional response.  Allow the feelings to do the talking.
