Inner Growth Word of the Day: Compassion

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) sympathetic consciousness of others’ distress together with a desire to alleviate it.

Compassion in a sentence: Sometimes it is easier to feel compassion when you’ve been through a similar situation as the person you’re showing compassion to.

Compassion in action: When you share understanding and want to give support in a difficult situation that someone else is going through, that is compassion.

Compassion and inner growth: How much compassion you have towards others and the situations they go through reveals the degree to which you can put yourself in another person’s shoes, but also how considerate you are for others.  Understanding where this consideration comes from and how you are able to relate to others to whatever the degree is, helps you gain an understanding of yourself; but also can bring you to work on those areas so that you may expand your compassion towards more and more people.  This type of exploration brings about inner growth since there’s getting to know your compassion from your heart, and also those attributes which may not be from your heart and therefore reveal changes you may choose to make moving forward.

Compassion and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about compassion? When did I first consider how compassionate or not I was towards others?  Who introduced me to compassion?  What was one of my first experiences with compassion that left a mark?  In what ways do I show compassion?  How have others shown compassion to me and in what circumstances?  Are there different levels of compassion for different situations?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with compassion at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From your list pick two words that stand out the most and for one of the words think of a situation where you showed compassion to others, write it down. Then do the same with the second word, but this time list a situation where someone showed compassion towards you.  Write about both instances and use the words from your first list in them.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about compassion and center those feelings in your heart. As the emotions that flow warm your heart center, allow thoughts to come to mind and notice what the first thought is.  Focus on that thought and see what feelings this one brings about, but this time let those emotions flow from your heart to the rest of your body.
