Inner Growth Word of the Day: Misunderstood
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) 1. to fail to understand. 2. to interpret incorrectly.
Misunderstood in a sentence: To be misunderstood is something that happens to everyone at one time or another, it’s what you do in response that can bring clarity.
Misunderstood in action: When you explain or share something with someone and they don’t understand or misinterpret what you’re saying, that’s being misunderstood.
Misunderstood and inner growth: When you are misunderstood, you have two areas that you can explore and in doing so pursue inner growth: one is your reaction to being misunderstood and the other is your communication. Both bring about the act of you understanding a number of things about yourself, such as how you feel about being misunderstood and why you feel this way; or when communicating do you keep in mind who you’re talking to (their thought process, perspective, how they understand something) or not; and so on.
Misunderstood and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: When was the first time I was misunderstood? Is there a difference between being misunderstood and feeling misunderstood? If so, what is the difference? How has being misunderstood affected my relationships? What do I do when I notice I’m being misunderstood? How do I react to being misunderstood or feeling misunderstood?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with misunderstood at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now list two instances where you were misunderstood. Use the words from your first list to write about the two instances. When you’re done make a list of words that describe the commonalities between the two instances where you were misunderstood. What stands out from the list of words?
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about being misunderstood and hone in on the emotion that is the strongest between the ones that you are feeling. After a couple minutes allow thoughts to come in too and notice what particular life events or situations come to mind.
