Inner Growth Word of The Day 123 – One-sided

Inner Growth Word of the Day: One-sided

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (adj.) 1 b. limited to one side.  2. unilateral.

One-sided in a sentence: One-sided opinions limit one’s ability to see the whole picture.

One-sided in action: When you make a unilateral decision, or see something from only one point of view, this is being one-sided.

One-sided and inner growth: Exploring the things you are one-sided about brings inner growth because it gets you to look into your reasons for this unilateral thinking; which opens up the notion that you are choosing to see something from one perspective (while there are more sides to it).  As you dive deeper into your one-sidedness you understand where the perspective comes from and if it really resonates with you (and if so, why that is the case).  By acknowledging one-sidedness and taking a look at the other sides of a story, you also gain a full picture about you, as well as the other sides/perspectives.

One-sided and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What does one-sided mean to me? How have one-sided opinions affected my life?  How has being one-sided affected my relationships?  What are some of the biggest takeaways from my one-sided experiences?  What are some things I’m one-sided about?  Are there things I’ve become one-sided about in time?  If so, what are they and why am I one-sided about them?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with one-sided at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick the three words that stand out the most.  For each word, write out why they stand out and if it’s because of a specific experience that came to mind, write about the experience too.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about one-sided experiences and thoughts you’ve had or still have. Allow the feelings to take over once those experiences and thoughts are clear, and focus on one experience or thought at the time.  When you’re ready to start diving deeper into those experiences and thoughts, do so exploring one at a time and as you think about it, notice what feeling stands out the most from the different emotions that are flowing within you.
