Inner Growth Word of The Day 106 – Can’t

April 16

Inner Growth Word of the Day: Can’t

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) to be unable to do otherwise than.

Can’t in a sentence: There are many reasons why someone can’t achieve something, but sometimes those ‘can nots’ are a mindset, and not unmovable stoppers.

Can’t in action: When you aren’t able to do something or you think you’re not able to do something, it means you can’t.

Can’t and inner growth: To look at the things we can’t do because of circumstances or our own choice brings inner growth through the questioning that takes place in those moments.  By asking why we think we can’t or by exploring how we can accept or let go of something we can’t change allows us to gain inner knowledge and decide on steps to take to change or accept something from within.

Can’t and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about a can’t mindset? How have my reactions to the situations where I can’t change anything affected me?  What do I think about me saying I can’t when I know I could?  When was the first time I used the word can’t?  Has my idea of can’t affected my relationships?  How has my can’t mindset affected my relationships?  Do I know when my use of can’t is a choice and how I act once I make that realization?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with can’t at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Pick five of the words you listed and place next to each something you decided you can’t do and then something you couldn’t change at all due to external forces being the cause.  Note the difference between the can’t mindset and can’t due to uncontrollable situations.  What stands out the most?

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about can’t and allow them to take over. Try to let one feeling in at a time.  Once you feel that feeling has run its course, move on to letting thoughts come in too and start paying attention to the things you think about and the can’t part of those things.
