Inner Growth Word of the Day: Reaction

Google’s Dictionary/Search definition: (n.) 1. an action performed or a feeling experienced in response to a situation or event.

Reaction in a sentence: Your reaction changes depending on the event or situation, but you can also change your reaction if you put your mind to it.

Reaction in action: No matter the circumstance, an action causes a response and that response is a reaction; what type of reaction depends on you.

Reaction and inner growth: If you look at your reactions and explore them with questions of whys and how comes, you can arrive at an understanding of yourself, with that knowledge you can also decide if you’re ok with your present state in responding to events and situations or if you you’d rather transform them.

Reaction and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I think about my reaction to things overall? How about when I drill down to the different types of reactions I have, in different circumstances?  Are there reactions that take place that I’d like to understand at a deeper level?  How have my reactions to situations and events helped me?  What lessons have some of my reactions instilled in me?  What do I understand about me through my reactions?  Are there certain reactions that have changed through time?  If so, which ones and why?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with reaction at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Now list different types of reactions that come to mind, with the situations/events that you tie to that reaction, as well as the feeling that accompanies it.  From the lists choose one word per list and create a story with the inverse type of reaction chosen for that event/situation.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about reaction and notice what types of feelings arise as you do this. Also, make a note of what events or situations come to mind.  Try to allow your feelings to flow and not get stuck on one event or situation, but make a note of those moments that affect you in a unique way so that you can come back to explore them.
