Inner Growth Word of the Day: Difference
Google’s Dictionary/Search definition: (n.) 1. a point or way in which people or things are not the same.
Difference in a sentence: From the outside differences between things or people are pretty obvious, but when it comes to what’s below the surface not so much.
Difference in action: Differences between people reveal themselves as those individuals interact, converse, share experiences and life events amongst each other.
Difference and inner growth: Differences are an opportunity for you to look at your uniqueness, as well as the uniqueness of others. By looking at differences with curiosity and the desire to understand, you can pursue inner growth for yourself and also gain insights into other ways, thoughts, and perspectives from the people around you.
Difference and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: Do I judge differences? If yes, how so? Do I think what makes me different also makes me unique or something else? How do I look at others and their differences? Do I think differences need to change or only some differences? If so, why?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with difference at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with differences and you. Write a story with your differences being the main theme throughout the story. Then make a second list or word bubble with difference at the center and list or put around it all the words associated with differences and others (the differences of other people). Now write a story with you (and your differences) interacting with at least one other person that has five of the differences you included in your second list. What do you notice about your lists and your stories? How did the differences affect your story? How did you treat your differences in the story compared to the differences of others in the second story?
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about difference, what’s the first feeling that you notice? How about the first thought? Take note if you feel closed off towards others or as if there’s a need to justify these differences or if you feel completely comfortable. Let your feelings speak to you; don’t stop the direction they seem to be taking. You can write something down that stands out and come back to it, but let yourself feel for at least a couple minutes before stopping the flow of emotions connected to your differences. Then if you’re up for it, do the same thing, but with someone else’s differences and see what feelings you notice.
