Inner Growth Word of the Day: Expectation

Google’s Dictionary/Search definition: (n.) 1. a strong belief that something will happen or be the case in the future. 2. a belief that someone will or should achieve something.

Expectation in a sentence: When someone gives their best, the expectation is a positive end result.

Expectation in action: Expectations arise from what someone believes will happen if they do something a certain way and/or from giving specific characteristics to something that hasn’t taken place yet.

Expectation and inner growth: Understanding how expectations affect us can lead to inner growth because expectations don’t always turn out the exact way we envision, which leads to questioning why and those whys lead us to explore the situation and ourselves.

Expectation and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: Are expectations a part of everything I do? What do my expectations say about me?  When I create expectations, what am I basing them on?  What do I do to achieve my expectations?  Do I consider factors outside of my control when setting expectations?  How do I learn from those expectations that didn’t play out the way I thought they would?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with expectation at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Then create a list or word bubble with 10 specific expectations you’ve had; five that turned out the exact way you expected and five that didn’t turn out at all as you expected them to.  For each expectation write down a short synopsis of what happened, how things played out and how you felt about everything.  Once you’re done, identify what these 10 situations say about you and if there’s anything you’d like to change about your relationship with expectations.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about expectation and how these feelings have affected your behavior and ideas about the world and people, and towards the world and people. Do those feelings make you feel powerless or powerful?  Do they open you up to the world or limit what you give?
