Inner Growth Thought of the Day: Flexing Your Perspective Muscles
The way your perspective affects situations and your emotions goes beyond what we sometimes realize; until that is, you start paying attention as you pursue inner growth.
Once you have awareness of your perspective you are able to “flex” those perspective “muscles” by switching to an open versus a limited view and testing out different ways to work with situations that you would typically (pre-perspective awareness) be closed off to learning from and that you would simply react to.
Here are some ways to flex your perspective muscles while pursuing inner growth.
- Make a list every week of five things you noticed about how your perspective affects your potential in challenging situations. Next to each item you list place two things you’re going to do to try and improve how it affects your potential in the moment.
- Take five minutes each day to think about something you feel very strongly about and include in your thinking two perspectives that are totally opposite yours. As you do this, think of one way you can be understanding of those other perspectives, while maintaining yours in a way that doesn’t close you off.
- Once a year, make a note of two to three ways your perspective has benefited from you testing new ways to be open and understanding of others’ perspectives.
