When it comes to setting your own milestones, it’s not something everyone has in their awareness at first. Coming from a place where each of us is taught what a milestone is, until the time of the desire to know one’s self and to understand their heart from the depths of that heart, there will be many milestones that were set for you and not really by you.
If you are on an inner growth journey though, this means you are in that awareness space and for milestones it’s a matter of taking a look at your heart and its relationship to the milestones you’re actively achieving and/or pursuing to know if they are truly a part of who you are, where you want to go, and what you’d like to share with you and the world.
Here are some ways you can work to set your own milestones or check if you’re setting them already.
- Make a list of the milestones you want to achieve short-term and long-term. For each item write three reasons why the milestone is important to you.
- With your list, pick a milestone and read your reasons for it being important. Pay close attention to the feelings that come across and the thoughts too. Whatever stands out, ask yourself why you feel this way and/or why you’re thinking this thought. Contemplate until you are satisfied with your answers and have identified if your milestone is yours from the heart or prescribed to you by others (parents, society, status, job, etc.).
- When you look back, what milestones do you see you achieved? List them all out and notice how they make you feel, but also how they played a role in where you are today. Use the ones you find are not milestones from the heart to identify future milestones that are also not a true part of you.
