Inner Growth Word of The Day 315 – Tendency

Inner Growth Word of the Day: Tendency

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. a proneness to a particular kind of thought or action.  1 b. direction or approach toward a place, object, effect, or limit.

Tendency in a sentence: One’s tendency to do something or think a certain way is not always as obvious as one may think.

Tendency in action: Taking a specific action in certain circumstances or thinking in a unique way are both characterized as tendency.

Tendency and inner growth: Becoming aware of your tendencies assists inner growth seeing as it gets you to explore and think about each of them.  Through this exploration you look within more than to the outside world and therefore work with things that you may have been putting off since you weren’t aware of them.

Tendency and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What’s one tendency I have that others spot immediately? When did I first start thinking about my tendencies?  How do my tendencies affect my life?  Why is it important to me to understand my tendencies?  What have I learned thanks to my tendencies?  How has a tendency I have affected a situation or person?  What tendencies have changed through time?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with tendency at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. From this list think of two tendencies that have been with you ever since you can remember noticing them.  Describe each tendency with the words from your list and notice what stands out the most about each, and if there’s any commonalities between the two.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about tendency and allow those feelings to take their course. Pay particular attention to how the emotions travel through your body, steady flow, accumulate in places or weigh you down, and so on.  As you sit in silence, also visualize a steady river flowing to the ocean or through the mountains, and when you’re ready, think of specific tendencies you have that stand out.  Notice how your feelings change and/or stay the same.
