Inner Growth Word of the Day: Suffering


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1. the state or experience of one that suffers.  2. Pain.


Suffering in a sentence: Suffering is never a great feeling or situation; however, when going beyond the pain, there are always valuable takeaways that can add to your person and life moving forward.


Suffering in action: When you are in pain because of something or someone that is suffering.


Suffering and inner growth: In moments of suffering you can pause and reflect on that which you see from what has just happened.  A thorough exploration of the contour versus focusing on that which is causing pain can help to see the hidden lessons and insights for you to be able and takeaway.  As you transform how you look at these moments you also pursue inner growth (from within and outside of you).


Suffering and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I think about suffering? When was the first time I experienced suffering?  How has suffering changed my life?  How has suffering affected my relationships?  What are some major takeaways from suffering that have transformed how I see the world?  Who have I shared moments of suffering with?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with suffering at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick the one word that reminds you of a major event that involved suffering.  Write about the experience using the rest of the words from your list and list at least one positive takeaway from the experience.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about suffering and as you do this visualize a place that brings joy to your heart. This visualization will help you to allow your feelings from suffering to take their course without overwhelming you.  Now, as you sit and breath, notice if your emotions are flowing evenly or stop in some places more than others.  If so, visualize that energy flowing down to your feet and out of you, like a river that flows into the ocean.  When you’re ready take a deep breath and send love to the suffering, then think of one of the happiest things in your life and repeat with as many different situations where suffering was involved.
