Inner Growth Word of the Day: Grateful


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (adj.) 1 a. appreciative of benefits received.  1 b. expressing gratitude.


Grateful in a sentence: When you are grateful in life you are able to keep all that is good in the forefront and not take it for granted.


Grateful in action: Acknowledging with a sense of appreciation the things that you receive is being grateful.


Grateful and inner growth: Inner growth is achieved when you explore the level of grateful tendencies you have in regards to the things that come your way in life or the people that surround you.  This type of exploration allows you to find out why you are or aren’t grateful and what you are or aren’t grateful for.  As you contemplate and dig deep to find your answers you are brought to take actions to keep grateful in the forefront by also surrounding yourself with people and things that resonate with you, or better put, to remove those things that give you a bad feeling inside and possibly weigh you down.


Grateful and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I see being grateful as a benefit in life? When was the first time I recall being grateful for something or someone?  What type of grateful feelings have I recently had and for what or who?  How has grateful tendencies affected my life?  How has being grateful to people affected my relationships?  What is my definition of grateful?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with grateful at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now make a second list and put down two or three events where you experienced being grateful for the situations that arose.  Pick one of the three events and write about it using the words from your first list.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about grateful and allow them to flow. As this happens notice where your feelings are coming from and where they go.  Visualize a river flowing to ensure your emotions flow just the same throughout you.  When you’re ready allow thoughts to come in and focus on the thought that provokes the biggest emotional response within you.  Allow the feelings of this event to flow and do the rest of the talking.
