Inner Growth Word of the Day: Misunderstanding

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1. a failure to understand.

Misunderstanding in a sentence: A misunderstanding can take place even if two people think they are communicating with each other clearly.

Misunderstanding in action: When you have a conversation with someone or a group of people and they don’t understand you or misinterpret what you say misunderstanding takes place.

Misunderstanding and inner growth: A look at when misunderstanding takes place, both on your end and when you are misunderstood, gets you to explore how you communicate and how you take in what others communicate to you. This brings inner growth because it leads you to discover to what extent you put yourself in someone else’s shoes, and how attentive you are to how others understand, so that you can communicate in a way that they can receive your message without misinterpreting it.  With this level of awareness, you can also make changes to avoid misunderstandings and gain insights into why misunderstandings take place when they do.

Misunderstanding and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: When was the first time I experienced a misunderstanding? How have misunderstandings affected my relationships?  In what circumstances do misunderstandings take place most often in my life?  Are there repetitive types of misunderstandings that I’ve noticed in my communication efforts?  What types of misunderstandings are more common when I’m the listener?  How do misunderstandings make me feel?  How have misunderstandings affected my life?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with misunderstanding at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From the list of words pick three that express exactly how you feel and think about misunderstandings.  Now use the rest of the words from your first list to write about an impactful experience you had where misunderstanding was the main component.  When you’re done look at the three words you picked that express how you feel and think about misunderstandings and see how they relate to the impactful experience you wrote about.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about misunderstanding and allow those emotions to go from head to toe without thinking, just focusing on where those feelings are coming from and what they are saying to you through the different sensations.
