Inner Growth Word of the Day: Taking
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) 1. to get into one’s hands or into one’s possession, power, or control. 6. to transfer into one’s own keeping. 10. to adopt, choose, or avail oneself of for use.
Taking in a sentence: Taking something doesn’t mean it’s not being offered to you.
Taking in action: Getting something to keep for yourself includes any number of things, and whatever they are, they involve taking.
Taking and inner growth: A look at taking gets you to explore yourself and how you turn to life and/or others for things you may need or want. This type of dive into your needs and wants, gets you to notice if there’s something you’re searching for through your taking. It is through this in-depth exploration that inner growth can take place.
Taking and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about taking? When I take, why do I take? What are things that I tend to take a lot of (non-tangible things can be taken too, like emotional support)? Is there something I never take? How has taking affected my life? What do others take from me? Are there some people that take more than others? If so, what do they take and why? How does it affect me when others take from me?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with taking at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. From the words you put on the list, associate to each of them something you’ve taken or has been taken from you. Next list three times in your life taking helped you and/or someone else.
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about taking and let them flow. If thoughts come to mind, pause them for as long as possible (try at least five minutes). Once you’ve allowed your emotions to run freely, start noticing the thoughts that cross your mind and explore them one by one, always allowing your feelings to flow and do the talking.
