Inner Growth Thought of the Day: Second Guessing Your Instincts
When you think about your instincts and how many times you second guess them there’s probably a number of scenarios that run through your mind (anything from getting an incorrect answer to an exam question to making a purchasing choice on something you want to buy later than in the moment you thought of buying it).
These doubts come for reasons of our environment bringing us to think before we act. Just think about how many times children get stopped from doing what they instinctively want to do. There’s good reasons for why things go as they go when children, but this also develops a natural habit of second guessing or stopping from doing what you instinctively want to do.
As adults with this awareness, you can now ponder over your instincts and look to set aside that doubt, which usually stops you in your tracks.
- Make a list (mental or on paper) of every time you recall your instincts being right and of every time you second guess your instincts, and what the outcome was/is following the event.
- Moving forward when you catch yourself second guessing your instincts take the time to remember this list and tune in to your heart in the moment.
- List 5-10 reasons (pros and cons) to why you should or shouldn’t move forward with your instinctual choice, thought, decision; while remembering the dynamic of why you tend to second guess your instincts.
