Inner Growth Word of The Day 253 – Distress

September 10

Inner Growth Word of the Day: Distress

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 2 a. pain or suffering affecting the body, a bodily part, or the mind.  2 b. a painful situation.

Distress in a sentence: Every person experiences distress throughout their lifetime and how you choose to manage the situation can bring you further into pain or away from it.

Distress in action: When you are suffering or living a painful moment that is distress.

Distress and inner growth: Distress can cause a lot of pain, which if explored brings the opportunity of inner growth through the consideration of those pains in a way that identifies what you can do to relieve the pain and manage situations like these in ways that bring about positive change in your life.

Distress and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What moments of distress have I learned the most from? When was the first time I experienced what I consider distress?  Who was supportive in those moments of distress?  How did I use my experiences with distress to grow?  What are my biggest takeaways from distress?  How has distress affected my relationships?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with distress at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. From this list take two words that remind you of important moments where distress taught you something valuable that is still a part of your life today.  Write about one of these two moments in your life using the rest of the words from the list.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about distress and imagine a warm feeling in your heart that eases the stressful moment and gives you a sense of security and inner ease. As you do this notice how your emotions change and where they tend to flow to within your body.
