Inner Growth Word of the Day: Compare

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) 2 a. to examine the character or qualities of especially in order to discover resemblances or differences.  2 b. to view in relation to.

Compare in a sentence: You shouldn’t compare yourself to others because different perspectives, experiences, and surroundings make a huge difference in outcomes and life decisions.

Compare in action: Looking at similarities and differences between you and others is to compare.

Compare and inner growth:  When you explore what you compare in your life you can find areas that you are obviously trying to further understand and develop in yourself.  This analysis and awareness helps you to put things in perspective according to your reality and true self, which in turn bring about inner growth.

Compare and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What does it mean to me to compare my life to another’s? How do I compare things in my life?  When was the first time I compared my choices to those of someone else?  How does comparing affect my life?  How does comparing affect my relationships?  What are my biggest lessons from comparing things in my life?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with compare at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list think of one thing you always compare in your life.  What is this thing you compare and why?  Write about it using the words from your list.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about anything you compare in your life and see what thoughts and emotions arise. As you do this think of comparing things with just yourself, no external people or outcomes.  Notice what difference this makes in the emotions that come about and as you feel these feelings, visualize a flowing stream so that any weighing emotions can flow down the stream and leave you completely.
