Inner Growth Word of the Day: Experience

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1 a. direct observation of or participation in events as a basis of knowledge.  1 b. the fact or state of having been affected by or gained knowledge through direct observation or participation.  2 a. practical knowledge, skill, or practice derived from direct observation of or participation in events or in a particular activity.  3 a. the conscious events that make up an individual life.  3 b. the events that make up the conscious past of a community or nation or humankind generally.  4. something personally encountered, undergone, or lived through.  5. the act or process of directly perceiving events or reality.

Experience in a sentence: An experience in life can mean a lifetime of learning and lessons depending on the various emotional and real-life components of that experience you went through, as well as your mindset towards experiences.

Experience in action: When you live something, an action, a relationship, a job, school, those are examples of an experience.

Experience and inner growth: Any experience that comes your way brings about inner growth, whether conscious or unconscious, the only difference is that when you decide to be aware of those hidden inner growth takeaways you expand the experience to also bring about inner discovery, reflection, transformation from your consciousness and proactive decision making.

Experience and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: What do I define as an experience? How have life experiences affected my relationships?  When did I first start thinking about my experiences in a way that could bring about changes in my life and/or in me?  Why are experiences valuable to me?  When did I first think of an experience in a way that would add to my inner growth?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with experience at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list think of three experiences that have affected you the most from an inner growth perspective.  Write about them and how they exactly affected you by using the words from your list.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about experience and notice where the feelings start from and how they flow throughout your body. If you find them settling in certain areas visualize them moving along.  As you sit in silence and tune in to these emotions, allow thoughts of different types of experiences to come to mind and notice which ones come to mind most and what types of feelings they arise that differentiate from your initial feelings.
