Inner Growth Word of the Day: Instinct

 

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: 2 b. behavior that is mediated by reactions below the conscious level

 

Instinct in a sentence: Trusting your instinct doesn’t always come easy depending on the level of awareness you have of that instinct when it’s happening.

 

Instinct in action: Reacting to an action or conversation without planning or thinking is instinct.

 

Instinct and inner growth: Taking a step back to explore your instinct in different scenarios and events allows you to have in sight things that could be considered triggers, as you learn those triggers and see what makes them so important to you (through your thinking about them) you gain inner growth in knowledge and the opportunity to transform your triggers, as well as identify your instinct to react when it’s happening.

 

Instinct and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: When was the first time I thought about instinct? How has instinct affected my life?  How has instinct affected my relationships?  Why does instinct matter to me?  Who have I learned the most from when it comes to my instinct?  How do I look at the situations where my instinct brought me to a place I wasn’t expecting?  What’s one of my takeaways from instinct?

 

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with instinct at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Pick the one word that represents how you feel about instinct the most, then think of a specific life event where your instinct played a major role in what happened and use the rest of the words in your list to write about this event.

 

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about instinct and allowing them to freely flow, just feeling and sensing where they are coming from and where they are going. As you visualize the path of your emotions flowing throughout your body, if you notice any areas where they tend to settle, stop a moment to reflect and contemplate why you think that is, then visualize that feeling moving along.  Do this for as long as you like and notice if any feelings stand out more than others when you’re done.
