Inner Growth Word of the Day: Gratitude


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) the state of being grateful.


Gratitude in a sentence: Gratitude is felt and expressed in different ways, whether it is by feeling joy for being alive or by doing something nice for someone who you are happy to have in your life.


Gratitude in action: When you are thankful for something or someone, that is gratitude.


Gratitude and inner growth: A look at the gratitude you hold for the things and people in your life allows you to know what it is you are thankful for and what your outlook on those moments and people in your life involve.  This means you can find areas where gratitude is absent and explore them.  This exploration leads to inner growth as you take steps to address those areas.


Gratitude and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: How does gratitude play a role in my life? When did I first notice gratitude?  What types of people do I express gratitude the most?  How has gratitude affected my life?  What role has gratitude played in my relationships?  When was the last time I felt gratitude for something or someone?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with gratitude at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. From this list pick two words that stand out the most and that bring to mind a specific event or moment where you felt gratitude.  Write about one of those two events or moments using the words from your first list.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about gratitude and allow them to flow freely taking notice of where those emotions stem from and where they go. If they tend to concentrate in one area of your body, visualize those emotions as they spread out to the rest of your body.  When you’re ready allow one thought to come in that relates to what you’re feeling and explore what that thought is as you are noticing those emotions connected to the thought.
