Inner Growth Word of the Day: Hard


Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (adj.) 8 a1. difficult to bear or endure. 8 b1. lacking consideration, compassion, or gentleness.


Hard in a sentence: Dealing with hard events or people isn’t always easy, but there are things you can learn from those experiences that assist you throughout your life.


Hard in action: When faced with a difficult situation or person, that is hard.


Hard and inner growth: The hard moments or people that come into our life bring us to face feelings that lead us to thinking about how to resolve the situation or deal with the person.  This gives us insight on our reactions to hard things and people in life, and with this awareness inner growth is pursued so that we can encounter those hard situations without a negative effect on our life or our person.  If we’re hard, this too gives us room for inner growth since it gets us to contemplate our actions and ways with others.


Hard and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: When was I faced with a hard decision for the first time? How do I handle hard people and life events?  What are some of my biggest takeaways from having to deal with hard events?  How has facing hard decisions affected my relationships?  When I’ve been hard on someone or in a situation how did I handle it?  What changes has a hard decision brought into my life?


  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with hard at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now create a second list with three hard life events that have most affected you and use the words from your first list to write about each event.  Noticing if there are any recurring characteristics between the three events.


  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about hard and allow those emotions to flow throughout your body. Don’t think about anything, instead focus on where those feelings are going and what they are telling you about how you deal with hard events.  When you’re ready, let thoughts come in and focus on the very first thought that crosses your mind.  Let the feelings from this event tell you more about what makes this event so important.
