Inner Growth Word of The Day 98 – Nurture

April 8

Inner Growth Word of the Day: Nurture

Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1. training, upbringing.  3. the sum of the environmental factors influencing the behavior and traits expressed by an organism.

Nurture in a sentence: The nurture versus nature debate is a never ending one when it comes to human behavior.

Nurture in action: When your family and life environment have influenced who you are, this is considered nurture.

Nurture and inner growth: Nurture and one’s personality is pretty significant for inner growth because when you explore yourself, you are looking into those nurtured traits and characteristics.  The ones that don’t resonate with you very well catch your attention first; you dive in to them head on and then get good at identifying your nurtured behaviors in general.  This leads to a continuous look at traits and behaviors with the awareness that nurture is what could be the reason for them and not that they are yours from the heart.

Nurture and inner growth action steps:

  1. In-depth self-exploration questions: Is my character affected more by nature or by nurture? Do I believe in nurture or nature more than the other, or the same?  How does each affect me?  And how have my nurtured traits affected my life?  Do I think nurture can be something we change?  Can I nurture new behaviors within myself?

  1. List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with nurture at the center and then list or put around it all the other words that come to mind associated with it. Now write a second with the characteristics you’ve identified as nurture ones.  Pick five of those traits and place next to each one or two words from your first list.  From this list of five write about one of the characteristics and use the words you put next to it in what you write.

  1. Bring your awareness to your feelings about nurture without allowing specific nurtured traits come to mind; just the overall feeling of the topic applied to humanity. Then start including your personal experience with nurture and as you do this, focus on one behavior, trait or characteristic that you see as something nurtured.  This will allow you to fully focus on how you feel with each of these traits.
