Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (n.) 1. a notable capacity, talent, or endowment. 2. something voluntarily transferred by one person to another without compensation. 3. the act, right, or power of giving.
Gift in a sentence: The significance of a gift depends on the person receiving and/or giving it.
Gift in action: Having a special talent or ability, or giving something to someone for free or receiving it from someone for free are all gifts.
Gift and inner growth: Whether a gift is an object you’ve received or given, or whether it’s a specific ability or circumstance you are grateful to have and therefore see as a gift, matters for inner growth from an explorative position in the feelings that surround those gifts and the opinions you have of them. Looking into your thought process and perspective about a gift gives you insights on yourself and an in-depth view of things you may learn from or want to change.
Gift and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: What’s a gift to me? How do I feel about gifts? Do my feelings change if a gift is an object or a non-material thing, like the feeling of being lucky in life and seeing that as a gift? What have I learned from thinking about my personal gifts? What have I learned from giving gifts? How have gifts affected my life (both material and non-material ones)?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with gift at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. For each word list a gift (material or not) that you have received and given. When you’re done, make a note of which gifts had the most impact on you (both given and received).
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about gift and do your best to simply focus on the first feeling that came about when you read the word. After about five minutes, think about the two types of gifts, objects and non-material gifts, and allow the feelings for each to express themselves. Note if there are any differences, note the events or thoughts that come to mind, and when you’re ready explore each thought individually (the feeling they bring about, ask questions to find out more about their meaning to you, and so on).
