Inner Growth Word of the Day: Labeling
Merriam-Webster Dictionary definition: (v.) 1 a. to affix a label to. 1 b. to describe or designate with or as if with a label. To put a word or name on something to describe or identify it. To name or describe (someone or something) in a specified way.
Labeling in a sentence: Some people are very quick to label, while others don’t label at all.
Labeling in action: When someone categorizes or groups people together that is considered labeling.
Labeling and inner growth: Labeling can help your inner growth by bringing to the surface, through the act of grouping and/or categorizing people, your judgement of others or things. By asking questions that dig deep into your act of labeling, you uncover your hidden judgements and can look to resolve them if you wish to do so.
Labeling and inner growth action steps:
- In-depth self-exploration questions: How do I feel about labeling? Do I label myself and/or others? How has labeling affected my life? Was my view about labeling always the same or has it changed through time? If so, how has it changed. Has someone labeled me? Have they told me what and why they’ve labeled me?
- List or word bubble: Make a list or word bubble with labeling at the center and then list or put around it all the words that come to mind associated with it. Next, list all the times and how you’ve labeled someone. Get down to the specifics. Now put together the two lists by placing next to the labeling event the words from your first list. What stands out the most when doing this?
- Bring your awareness to your feelings about labeling and try to keep your attention focused on those feelings. As soon as you start drifting into thought, write down the thought and continue with the feeling. If you notice mixed feelings then separate the thoughts further and group them by feeling category.
